ABOUT US

NEW CLASS:  DRAMA TECH (non-performance)
We are proud to offer a new drama class for the 2023-2024 school year!
This class is designed for those interested in  theatre/film, who may not have a desire to perform in front of others.  This course is a work in progress, but will feature units on Costume Design - including theatrical makeup and hair, Set Design, Lighting, and Sound technique.  Students in the tech class may also learn about the different types of stages, photography, camera angles, script analysis, and directing.  We will not be building actual sets at this time.  We will make small models, videos,  sketches, etc. to demonstrate our skills.
(If you have experience with Sound and Lighting already - please see Mrs. Hammons about possibly enrolling in the Advanced Class and running sound/lights for our shows!)

Theatre/Film 1 - DRAMA 1 - BEGINNING DRAMA
In Drama class, you can expect a variety of fun activities.  We will spend time learning the parts of the stage and learning about each other.  We will play games and we will perform!  The only requirement is that you try your best!  And of course, good attendance is important - in a class like Drama, you cannot simply make up “the work” if you’re gone.   Some specific things to expect:  Monologues, Partner Scenes, Small Group Scenes (all with some memorization required), Charades and other drama games, working with puppets, and Theatre History, video and script analysis, and journal response. Beginning theatre students do not put on public shows.  All performances take place in class - but you can absolutely try out for the Spring Musical and can audition for Advanced Drama in the spring.

Theatre/Film 2 - DRAMA 2 - INTERMEDIATE DRAMA
Drama 2 is open to any student who has completed and passed Drama 1.  Some activities are similar to Drama 1, but Drama 2 students will be held to a higher standard.  Drama 2 students may also dig deeper into script analysis, how to properly audition, build a resume, and identify acting types.

Theatre/Film 3 and 4 - ADVANCED DRAMA (Audition Only)
Students in Advanced Drama participate in festivals around town, present a play and a talent show in the fall,  and go on a field trip to the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood.  We may also visit a working movie studio!  Advanced Drama students learn about methodology, and direct their own class scenes.  Basic concepts from Theatre 1 and 2 are reviewed here as well.   Watch for more announcements on auditions for this class next spring!
If you have experience with sound/lighting, ask about joining this class without auditioning - we always need 1 or 2 tech-savvy students to run the shows!

Drama Club
Any student at CHS can be in the drama club.  Drama club students will help at drama events (work snack bars, marketing, etc.) and will help with fundraisers.   Drama club meetings will include planning activities and playing improv games and will meet the first Tuesday of every month, starting in September.  For students in Drama Class, Drama club will be part of the International Thespian Society - an honor society.  Students earn Thespian points by participating in drama activities, and are selected/inducted into ITS in the Spring, once they've accumulated enough points,  and can eventually earn cords for graduation or even scholarships.
